New Zealand Biggest Solar Pv System
A very tired team headed by Shane Spicer returned from Yealands Family Estate Winery in Blenheim last week, having achieved a real milestone for PowerSmart and the NZ solar power sector. They were tired with good reason, having successfully installed 396 x 250W panels on top of the Yealands Winery building. This 99 kW system was switched on on Tue 3rd December, making it the largest solar PV system operating in New Zealand. It produces 130,287kWh of electricity per year, which is enough electricity to power 17 average New Zealand households.

This has been a ground breaking project for both PowerSmart and Yealands, and it is fantastic to have it completed and operational! Our Managing Director Mike Bassett-Smith commented, “It is very exciting to be working with another forward thinking New Zealand business like Yealands Estate, who can see the great financial and environmental benefits of solar power systems.”
For founder of Yealands Family Wines, Peter Yealands, this is part of their continued drive to be the most sustainable winery in the world. Peter said “We are delighted to be supplementing our existing renewable energy supply, which already incorporates solar water heating, wind and biological initiatives. This will certainly assist us achieve our ultimate goal of self-sufficiency. ”
