Solar Impulse Sets World Record On Its Way To Ahmedabad
The second leg from Muscat to Ahmedabad represented Bertrand Piccard's first test on the round-the-world solar flight tour. A test he managed to complete in 13 hours and 20 minutes while at the same time setting a world record: the plane traveled 1,468 kilometers, the longest ever distance for a solar powered plane flying point to point.

However, both Piccard and his co-pilot Andre Borschberg were more enamoured with the enthusiastic welcome they received upon their arrival in India, adding '..It is an honour of being welcomed by the state of Gujurat, a visionary state which leads India in terms of solar installation.' Here's a look at the warm reception they received:

PLEASE HOLD

After flying in a holding pattern above Ahmedabad International airport for a couple hours, Air Traffic Control and favourable wind conditions finally allowed the Solar Impulse 2 to land at 11.25pm local time last night. A visibly tired but elated Bertrand Piccard was warmly welcomed on the runway by his co-adventurer Andre Borschberg, Linus Von Castelmur, the Swiss Ambassador to India and a government delegation from the state of Gujurat. With the second of twelve legs of the global solar flight now complete, Piccard's 13-hour journey represents another victory for Solar Impulse and its supporters.

THE FUTURE IS CLEAN AND YOU CAN BE PART OF IT

Piccard's message to the throng of journalists at today's press conference was clear - India plays a key role in helping to spread the 'future is clean' theme of renewable energy and clean technology. Piccard added, 'If you protect the environment with clean technologies, you create jobs, make profit for the industry, you create new markets with new technologies that the world desperately needs for a better quality of life.' This message also underscores ABB's mission, which is to provide 'power and productivity for a better world'.

On behalf of ABB, Subir Pal, President of the Discrete Automation and Motion at ABB India, warmly welcomed the Solar Impulse team to India, and added, 'The future is clean, efficient and inclusive. ABB is proud to be part of history in the making. This is not about aviation alone. The same technologies will trigger a wider spectrum of technologies that touch the lives of everyone.' An example of this is ABB's solar pump technology. To find out more about how this technology is crucial to improving the lives of people across the country, watch the video below

The Solar Impulse team plans to stay four days in Ahmedabad before crossing over to Varanasi on the next leg on their round-the-world solar flight.

Two Utilities Opt Out Of Cape Wind Deals Future Of Nantucket Sound Wind Farm In Doubt Energy Market Shifted Risk From Rate Payers To Developers Boston Globe
.

1/7/15, "Two utilities opt out of Cape Wind," Boston Globe, Jim O'Sullivan. "Future of Nantucket Sound turbine project in doubt as purchase contracts are terminated."

"THE CAPE WIND PLAN WAS DEALT A MAJOR SETBACK TUESDAY WHEN TWO POWER COMPANIES THAT HAD AGREED TO BUY ENERGY FROM THE NANTUCKET SOUND WIND FARM terminated their contracts with the developers, raising questions about the future of the 2.5 billion offshore project.

NATIONAL GRID AND NORTHEAST UTILITIES SAID CAPE WIND HAD MISSED THE DEC. 31 DEADLINE CONTAINED IN THE 2012 CONTRACTS to obtain financing and begin construction, and chosen not to put up financial collateral to extend the deadline.

NStar, a Northeast Utilities subsidiary, informed Cape Wind officials of its decision late Tuesday, officials said.

"Unfortunately, Cape Wind has missed these critical milestones," Northeast Utilities spokeswoman Caroline Pretyman said in an e-mail. "ADDITIONALLY, CAPE WIND HAS CHOSEN NOT TO EXERCISE THEIR RIGHT TO POST FINANCIAL SECURITY IN ORDER TO EXTEND THE CONTRACT DEADLINES. Therefore the contract is now terminated."

In a separate e-mail, National Grid spokesman Jake Navarro said the utility was "disappointed that Cape Wind has been unable to meet its commitments under the contract, RESULTING IN TODAY'S TERMINATION OF THE POWER PURCHASE AGREEMENT."

UNDER THE 2012 AGREEMENT, NORTHEAST UTILITIES AND NSTAR AGREED TO BUY 27.5 PERCENT OF CAPE WIND'S PRODUCTION. NATIONAL GRID HAD PREVIOUSLY SIGNED ON TO PURCHASE 50 PERCENT.

A CAPE WIND SPOKESMAN SAID THE DEVELOPER DOES NOT "REGARD THESE TERMINATIONS AS VALID" because of provisions that, the company argued, would extend the deadlines.

IN LETTERS DATED DEC. 31 TO BOTH UTILITIES AND STATE REGULATORS, Cape Wind president James Gordon asked that the power companies hold off on voiding the contracts, citing "extended, unprecedented, and relentless litigation by the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound," a leading foe of the project.

THOSE LAWSUITS, GORDON SAID IN HIS LETTER, HAD PREVENTED CAPE WIND FROM MEETING THE MILESTONES laid out in the 2012 contract. He argued that the litigation triggered a clause in the contract that allows for more latitude in Cape Wind's ability to meet the deadlines.

THE LONG-TERM IMPLICATIONS FOR THE OFTEN-DELAYED PROJECT REMAINED UNCLEAR LATE TUESDAY. Announcement of the soured deal came on the second-to-last full day in office for GOVERNOR DEVAL PATRICK, WHO HAS CHAMPIONED CAPE WIND OVER FIERCE POLITICAL OPPOSITION FROM SOME IN HIS OWN PARTY.

The governor has often pointed to renewable energy as a vital part of the state's economic future, and spent significant political capital in backing the proposal.

Ian Bowles, who as Patrick's first energy and environment chief helped shepherd the offshore project, said Tuesday's news may have spelled the end for Cape Wind.

"PRESUMABLY, THIS MEANS THAT THE PROJECT DOESN'T GO FORWARD," he said in a telephone interview.

The jeopardy in which Cape Wind finds itself REFLECTS A CHANGED ENERGY MARKET, IN WHICH DEVELOPERS BEAR MORE RISK THAN THE EVENTUAL RATEPAYERS, Bowles said.

"THE RISK IS ON THE DEVELOPER TO EITHER BUILD IT OR NOT. AND IN THIS CASE, THE DEVELOPER APPEARS TO HAVE FAILED," he said.

ADVANCES IN THE STATE'S RENEWABLE ENERGY AND EFFICIENCY POLICIES HAVE LESSENED THE IMPORTANCE OF CAPE WIND in its overall energy landscape, Bowles said.

In an e-mailed statement Tuesday, Patrick spokeswoman Jesse Mermell said, "The future of offshore wind in the Commonwealth remains bright, as does the path for the marine commerce terminal in New Bedford."

The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center last month released a request for proposals to manage the terminal, which is under development in New Bedford Harbor. That facility would help facilitate offshore projects such as Cape Wind.

GOVERNOR-ELECT CHARLIE BAKER IS SET TO TAKE OFFICE THURSDAY. ONCE A CRITIC OF CAPE WIND, BAKER SHIFTED POSITIONS DURING LAST YEAR'S CAMPAIGN, CALLING THE PROJECT "A DONE DEAL."

On Tuesday night, a Baker spokesman issued a statement that hinted that the new governor would not interject himself into the contract dispute.

"GOVERNOR-ELECT BAKER BELIEVES MASSACHUSETTS MUST CONTINUE TO PURSUE RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES AND DIVERSIFY THE ENERGY PORTFOLIO TO REDUCE OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT, and he will determine which policies will or will not keep Massachusetts a leader in environmental reform once in office," Baker spokesman Tim Buckley said.

Audra Parker of the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound said preventing the construction of Cape Wind would save billions for ratepayers.

"Very bad news for Cape Wind," she said. "VERY GOOD NEWS FOR MASSACHUSETTS RATEPAYERS."

THE OFFSHORE PROJECT, FIRST PROPOSED MORE THAN A DECADE AGO, has been dogged by permitting hurdles, political obstacles, and legal protests."

House Passes Bill Promoting Wind Energy Expansion

on Saturday, 10 January 2015
House Passes Bill Promoting Wind Energy Expansion
State Representative Curt Sonney (R-Harborcreek, 4th District) authored House Bill 188. It passed Wednesday (March 4, 2015), in the Pennsylvania House with flying colors: 194 to 1. The bill was first introduced four years ago, and did pass the House, but never made it onto the governor's desk.

In a statement, Rep. Sonney said: "I am hoping this is the first step toward eventually advancing the bill to Governor Tom Wolf's desk for his signature. Under existing law, owners of preserved farm land may grant a right-of-way for the installation, transportation or use of water, sewage, electric, telephone, coal or non-coal minerals by underground mining methods. It's simply common sense to allow them this additional use of their property."

"It's good for all of us here in the state of Pennsylvania being a renewable energy source that will never deplete, being [that it's] green energy," said Timothy Burch, a wind energy supporter in North East Township, the site of proposed wind turbine installation by Pioneer Green Energy Company. "I am definitely a supporter of wind energy; if the turbines were here on our farm I still could farm the land."

Burch was approached several years ago by Pioneer Green, who wanted to lease his land, along with others, in hopes of one day installing wind turbines. They held the lease until January 2015, when the energy company canceled the lease, terminating any wind power project - at least for now.

"Congress failed to pass the wind energy act that expired December 31 of 2014," said Burch, who added that North East is an ideal location for wind energy. "Basically all wind energy came to a standstill."

Burch said North East is right by the lake and has plenty of wind, and is not highly residential; all reasons he thinks the township is the perfect candidate for turbine installation.

After his dreams of having his land leased by an energy company, an obvious source of income, ended in January, Burch said he's excited Sonney has been able to push the bill through the House once again.

But, critics of wind energy in North East aren't so excited.

"[Sonney] told us [in October] he was going to let this bill die on the vine, so I'm surprised that he went back on his word and went ahead with the bill," said Matt Putman, member of Neighbors for a Responsible North East. "We are disappointed that Rep. Sonney went forward with the bill and went back on his word. Industry specs say that turbines are only about 23% efficient so they actually drive up the cost of electricity to the average consumer. There is no wind energy without federal government subsidies and that has put the project at a stop right now. It's depending on our tax dollars to supplement these, most of them, international companies to put up wind turbines."

Putman argues that free wind does not equal free electricity, citing millions of dollars of installation materials, set up and construction costs.

Clean Energy Australia Report 2011

on Wednesday, 17 December 2014
Clean Energy Australia Report 2011
Renewable energy provided almost 10 per cent of Australia's electricity in the last 12 months and more than half a million household solar power systems are now installed on Australian rooftops - around 35 times the amount just three years ago at the end of 2008.Over one million Australians now live in a solar household. Solar power has come of age and is now a real part of Australia's energy sector.Clean Energy Council Director Kane Thornton said Australia had set a target of sourcing 20 per cent of its electricity from renewable energy such as solar, wind, bioenergy, wave and geothermal power by 2020."The good news is we are now well on the way to achieving the 20% renewable energy target," he said."The last year has been a drought breaker in more ways than one. As well as giving Australia's farmers a boost, extra rainfall in key hydro power catchments made a huge difference, providing just over two-thirds of our renewable energy over the last year."We are already starting to see a boost from the energy produced by wind farms, with wind energy supplying enough clean electricity to power the equivalent of around 900,000 homes. Wind power is the lowest-cost form of renewable energy that can be rolled out on a large scale and we expect it to play a major part in meeting Australia's 20 per cent renewable energy target by 2020."Overall, renewable energy produced enough power for more than four million homes and came at a very low cost to consumers." While household renewable energy technologies such as solar power had an extremely successful year, industrial scale clean energy such as wind farms increased more modestly. This was mostly due to uncertainty around the introduction of a price on carbon.Mr Thornton said it had been a challenging couple of years for large scale clean energy developers, but the industry was optimistic about the year ahead."Now that we have a carbon price in place, we expect to see many clean energy companies investing in major projects in 2012 and beyond. This was the reform we needed to help unlock some major deals during the first half of next year."Clean energy is now a major industry employing thousands of people and this represents real opportunity for rural and regional areas in particular," he said. Key findings from the report include:Renewable energy produced 9.6% of Australia's electricity in the 12 months from 1 October 2010 to 30 September 2011.As of August 2011, 1031 MW of solar power was installed in Australia - representing more than 500,000 household systems. More than 230,000 of these were installed between January and August this year.Investment figures from Bloomberg New Energy Finance show that the Australian clean energy market was worth $5.2 billion in the 2010-11 financial year.More than 8000 people are directly employed in the installation, construction and maintenance of clean energy assets, but this doesn't include thousands more who are employed in administration, project management, sales etc.

Seias Q2 Report Business Is Beaming

on Thursday, 20 November 2014
Seias Q2 Report Business Is Beaming
The second quarterly report from SEIA (Solar Energy industry Association) is in, and the numbers show yet another sunny quarter for the solar industry. The second best yet in terms of overall capacity installed, namely 832 megawatts. For comparison purposes, that's roughly the equivalent of a coal or nuclear plant, i.e. we can replace a coal or nuclear plant with solar every three months. And this race has only just begun. It was the utility sector that saw the biggest gains with a jump of 42 percent over the previous quarter. And huge solar installations like Ivanpah are coming online by the end of the year. However GTM Research still believes that, "Distributed generation is the big story in the U.S. solar market this year. We expect significant growth, especially in the residential sector. " The residential PV market remained stable in the second quarter, but the real news was that California PV installations increased 7 percent despite the end of the California Solar Initiative rebate program. A welcome sign that solar is becoming increasingly competitive with fossil fuel sources of energy. SEIA also reports the solar industry is about to reach a number of milestones. The 100,000th individual solar system will be installed soon, and with 4.4 gigawatts of PV capacity expected to be added in the second half of this year, total installed solar capacity will surpass 10 gigawatts by year's end. Another encouraging trend the SEIA report highlights is how solar service companies are increasing the rate at which they install PV systems. This allows them to negotiate better equipment supply contracts and access lower cost of capital. While both SEIA and GTM research are optimistic about solar, they also warn of looming risks for the market. Particularly the threat from utilities that are trying to eliminate Net Metering, which fairly compensates homeowners for the electricity their PV panels feed into the grid. This is the cornerstone policy that created successful solar markets across America. In fact, it's so successful the utilities are worried by the competition, and they're starting to challenge Net Metering by claiming non-solar customers are being charged more because solar customers aren't paying enough. Actually, research shows that Net Metering is a net benefit to consumers, because it reduces generation, transmission and distribution costs. The real problem for utilities is that it reduces their profits, because every home solar watt generated is a fossil watt that they didn't sell. The next 12 months will be crucial in deciding how to appropriately value home solar and maintain fair prices for all ratepayers. As long as Net Metering or similarly helpful solar policies are maintained, says SEIA President Rhone Resch, "America's solar energy industry remains on course to have another record-shattering year. Today, there's more than 9,370 megawatts (MW) of total solar electric capacity across the U.S. - enough to power more than 1.5 million American homes, including the White House. We're helping to create new jobs, grow the U.S. economy, strengthen our nation's long-term energy security and fight climate change. That's a win-win in anyone's book." Inexhaustible amounts of solar energy beamed everywhere, every day for free turns out to be good for business.
